We left Thursday evening and drove to Cloverdale IN. Got there about 9:30 pm. Spent the night at a Holiday Inn Express. Friday morning we drove to Fort Wayne. Stopped at the Ossian Nursing Home to see Beth’s mother. Had a good visit. Went to Kelly’s place and then went to Mr. Coney to eat. Visited with her and the kids on Friday. Got up Saturday and went to Kelly’s and then drove downtown for the Three Rivers Festival Parade. It was a good parade. Went to Junk Food Alley. and then back to Kelly’s for more visiting. Went to motel and crashed for a while and then went back to Kelly’s to eat at Fish of Stroh. There are two places we always try to eat at when in Ft. Wayne (Coney and Fish of Stroh). We hit both of them this time. Sunday morning we got up and went to church with Kelly and the kids and then made a quick trip out to Ossian to take four generation pictures. Then we loaded up and went to the children’s zoo. Had a good time. Then Kelly, Jordan and the kids came out to the hotel and swam for a while. Really hated to say goodbye. Missing them already. We head home tomorrow.

Trip to Fort Wayne this weekend
Sunday, July 12th, 2009Busy weekend – quick trip to Fort Wayne
Sunday, March 8th, 2009I took Friday off and drove to Fort Wayne to see our new grandson, Austin. Beth has been there since February 26. She went to help Kelly since this was another c-section. He is a real cutie.
I really need to do some catch up here but to be honest, I would have to really work to remember what all we have done since the last time I updated and none if it is all that important so I’m just going to skip it and try to do a better job of posting on a regular basis.
Vacation
Sunday, June 22nd, 2008Spent the week from June 13 to June 23 on vacation in Indiana. Left on Friday and took two days to get there. Spent the night at the KOA in Terre Haute and then drove to Auburn IN on Saturday.
Sunday started out as a beautiful day. In fact, it was so nice that we did something that we have NEVER done before when camping. We left the awning down. We drove out and visited Beth’s mother and then stopped at the farm to visit with her brother. While we were at the farm the sky started to cloud up a bit and the wind started to pick up. Concern over the awning had us heading back north of town but we were too late. The awning had torn about half way across. Of course, we had to replace it since we were trading in the camper when we got back to St. Peters.
Went up to the public library on Monday. Met with some of the cousins that we had not see since 2006. Margie, Jane and Dean, Bobbi, Karin and Lori (who we had never met.)
Tuesday we went to Shipshewana. Kelly and the kids rode along with us. We met Linda, Tom and Ashley there. Didn’t quite make it all the way through but close. We didn’t buy too much this time.
Wednesday morning we spent time with Beth’s mother again and in the afternoon we drove over to Ohio to just over the state line. There are two Roop houses there. The first that we visited is in a high state of disrepair and probably won’t be there much longer. It is one of the oldest houses in Van Wert county. Next we drove to a farm that was once owned by my great-grandfather, George Wesley Standiford. The house burned a few years ago but the barn was still there. The slate room has been replaced and the siding has been covered with metal but we were able to go inside and see the barn from the inside. Seemed like that gave us a real feel for what the barn would have been like. Next, we drove to a second Roop house that is about 1/4 mile from the first. This one is being restored.
On Thursday we drove to Wren OH. We had been trying to get into the Wren mausaleum for about 6 years. One of the Roop cousins made arrangements for it to be unlocked on this morning. We took pictures of all of the headstones. Next we drove to the Wren Cemetery. I have two great-grandfathers buried in this cemetery. At this point we headed back to Ft. Wayne for dinner with Kelly and the grandkids at Chuckee Cheese.
Friday morning we got up and took the camper to Ben Davis RV in Auburn. They did a great job of installation. Took a little longer then we hoped but still reasonable. We made good use of the time from 9:00 until sometime after 10:00 trying to call the campground to make reservations for Fourth of July weekend. After the awning was repaired we pulled the camper down to Bear Creek Farms just south of Geneva IN. Set up camp and then went and helped set up for the reunion on Saturday.
On Saturday we visited with cousins that we had not seen since the reunion in 2006. Roger and Martha Barnhart were guest speakers. They discussed the SAR and DAR. I have known Roger for about 40 years. We both started working at Central Soya at about the same time. It was great catching up with Roger and Martha and also hearing about some of the other CSY folks. After lunch we everyone talked a bit about their ancestral line, the auction was finalized and the tombstone contest (which Beth sponsored) had the prizes awarded.
Saturday evening we hosted a campfire at our camper. Kathleen was there with her guitar and other unusual musical instruments. She led us in song. I believe everyone had a great time.
Sunday morning we had a small worship service led by Bob Richards. Kathleen led us in singing some hymns. Beth blessed us with her singing of ‘Amazing Grace.’ After the service eveyone said their goodbyes and headed for home. We went back to the camper, broke camp and headed for Terre Haute. We got to Terre Haute KOA in good time, got set up and were able to spend a relaxing evening and early to bed.
Monday morning we got up bright and early and hit the road. We took the camper to the house and unloaded everything into the living room. Amazing how much stuff a camper can hold. After the camper was empty Brian and I gave it a quick washing and then Beth and I took it down to Freedom RV and dropped it off. They are going to install the 5th wheel hitch in the truck. We will pick it up next weekend.
35th Anniversary
Thursday, February 28th, 2008Beth and I celebrated our 35th anniversary with a trip to Nashville TN on February 14 to 17. We had a great time. We went to the CM Hall of Fame, took a tour of Reyman Auditorium, ate lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, stopped in at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop, had a beer at Tootsie’s Orchad Lounge and finally went to the Grand Ole Opry in the Reyman. On Saturday we went to the Hermitage (Andrew Jackson’s home) and the Parthenon. We went to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and had dinner. Came back on Sunday at which time I proceeded to get sick. But it had a great time and we are both looking forward to the next 35 years.
Kansas trip – Sept. 21 – 24, 2007
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007Went to visit our daughter, Kelly, and two of our grandchildren, Jamie and Kelsey, in Kansas this weekend. We took 1/2 day off on Friday and a full day off on Monday so that we could spend two full days with them. Friday was Jamie’s birthday and next Friday will be Kelly’s birthday so this was a good time to visit even though we didn’t really celebrate either birthday.
On Saturday we went to the Apple Festival on base (Ft. Riley). Had a very good time.
On Sunday we did a little shopping and then just visited.
When we got home on Monday we went to square dance lessons but didn’t stay very long since they had more than enough angels and we were very tired.
Visit to Indiana 9/7 – 9/10/2007
Monday, September 10th, 2007September 7, 2007 – Beth and I both got off work at noon. We took the dog to the kennel and packed up and drove to Indianapolis for a wedding on Saturday. The drive was uneventful. We spent the night at a Super 8 in Brownsburg. Driving through Brownsburg gave us a bit of a feeling of deja-vu since we lived there for 7 years.
September 8, 2007 – Went to the wedding of a friend of both Kelly and April’s from quite a few years ago. Her mother was also a close friend of Beth’s. The wedding was beautiful and Sarah made a lovely bride. The reception was a bufet dinner that was delicious. After the reception we drove over to see some friends of ours, Dick and Ellen. Unfortunately, the time spent was too short.
September 9, 2007 - Drove to Fort Wayne in the morning. We got there about noon and went downtown and ate at Coney Island. Kelly ate with us – as did Jamie and Kelsey. Jamie had a hotdog there and became the fourth generation to eat there since Beth’s mother ate there when she was in high school. After eating we drove out to see my mother. We had a good visit with her and then ate at Fish of Stroh. We always try to eat at Coney Island and Fish of Stroh when we go to Fort Wayne. Sometimes we only get to one but this time we were lucky. After dinner we went out to visit with Dan and Jolene and the kids. Their kids are growing so fast.
September 10, 2007 – Got up Monday morning and went out to see Beth’s mother. Played some solitaire with her and then took her down to the lunch room where there was some entertainment. The man (I don’t know his name) was playing an electronic organ and singing some old time songs. Mom A. sang along with a lot of them. We really had a good visit. After we left there we drove home. Made good time. Back to work tomorrow.
