Catching up

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Have not taken the time to update this lately so I’ll update for the last two weekends. January 31, we went over to some friends house for dinner. These were camping folks again. She had a knee replacement in the fall and had missed out on some of the camping and wanted to have some of us over for dinner as a thank you for the cards and letters. February 7, we decided to drive to Pere Marquette State Park in Illinoise. It is along Highway 100 which runs right along the Mississippi River. It is also known as the Great River Road. We headed north to catch the Golden Eagle Ferry but about two miles from the Ferry there was a sign that said it was closed. So we had to turn around and go the long way. Headed over to Alton IL. On the MO side of the river we stopped at a place that is know for having eagles. There was a group of people there that belonged to the STL Audobon Society. They had some very powerful scopes. One guy let us look at the eagles through it. Looked like we could reach out and touch them. Next we headed north on 100. Stopped fairly often to watch the eagles. Most of them were sitting on the ice on the river. Couldn’t really get great pictures since I forgot the tripod and would have to zoom out quite a bit. The pictures I took are mostly blurry. We did see some close up but couldn’t get the camera ready in time. We saw one swoop down and grab a fish and start to fly off but dropped it and had to grab at it a second time. Drove on up to Pere Marquette State Park. There were supposed to be eagles there but we didn’t see any. Since the ferry was closed we had to turn around and retrace our route. Stopped in Alton IL at a place called Fast Eddies Bon Air. They advertise a lot around here. They have half pound burgers for 99 cents, fries are 99 cents, peel and eat shrimp 29 cents each. The catch is that there is a one drink minimum and no carry out. Beer is 3.75. So by the time you eat and have a beer it probably is not as cheap as it sounds but the food was excellent. We’ll probably go back some time. We did finally get a WiiFit. It is really a lot of fun but also a lot of exercise. I think we will enjoy it. That’s about it.
